US Calls for Accountability from India Over Alleged Assassination Plot

The United States continues to press India for accountability concerning an alleged plot involving an Indian government employee aimed at assassinating a US citizen on American soil last summer. This stance was reaffirmed by State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel during a recent press briefing.

Patel stated, “We remain committed to seeking accountability from the Indian government regarding the alleged involvement of an Indian government employee in the failed assassination attempt against a US citizen that occurred last summer.” He noted that the US has been engaging directly with Indian officials at senior levels to address these concerns.

Regarding a recent news report about Canadian authorities arresting five Indian nationals who were allegedly planning to target a Sikh separatist at a wedding, Patel declined to comment. “For information related to the Canadian news report, I would direct you to the Canadian government, as they are best suited to address their own law enforcement matters,” Patel said.

In November of the previous year, US federal prosecutors charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta for his alleged role in the foiled assassination attempt against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Gupta, who was apprehended in the Czech Republic in June, was extradited to the US on June 14.
