New Delhi, Oct 12 – The Press Club of India (PCI) has called for the immediate withdrawal of an FIR against journalist Sunil Chadha, who works for The News Radar, following his coverage of the Haryana assembly elections.
In a statement, the PCI expressed concern over the increasing trend of using FIRs to suppress media voices across various states, regardless of the ruling party. The organization highlighted that this practice undermines the fundamental principles of democracy and justice.
Reports indicate that the Himachal Pradesh Police in Shimla filed the FIR against Chadha, who has been facing daily harassment due to his critical analysis of the Haryana state assembly election results. The PCI emphasized the importance of press freedom, stating that it is essential for a healthy democratic society.
The PCI has voiced its solidarity with Chadha and urged Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to take action by retracting the FIR. Additionally, the organization called for proper training for police personnel in the state regarding the media’s role and responsibilities.
