IIT Guwahati startup creates AI-driven surveillance robots for international border security.

New Delhi, Mar 23 – Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, have made significant strides in border security by developing advanced robotic systems designed for international border management. These robots are equipped with AI-powered surveillance capabilities, enabling continuous real-time monitoring across challenging terrains, as stated by officials.

The innovative robots, created by Da Spatio Rhobotique Laboratory Pvt. Ltd (DSRL), a startup incubated at IIT Guwahati, have garnered recognition from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for their potential integration into India’s defense framework. The Indian Army is currently conducting field trials to evaluate the effectiveness of this surveillance system.

Arnab Kumar Barman, CEO of DSRL, emphasized that this autonomous robotic system transcends the limitations of traditional security measures, which often depend on drones, stationary cameras, and manual patrols. “Our system is designed to navigate various terrains, weather conditions, and endurance challenges,” Barman explained.

He further elaborated, “With capabilities such as seamless pole traversal, adaptive obstacle navigation, and AI-driven reconnaissance, our technology is a game-changer for border protection, critical infrastructure surveillance, and strategic defense applications. Our goal is to create state-of-the-art, AI-driven surveillance solutions that meet the evolving demands of national security.”

The robotic system is engineered for operation in difficult terrains, ensuring round-the-clock vigilance. Barman expressed pride in contributing to India’s vision of self-reliance in defense technology and reaffirmed the commitment to ongoing innovations that bolster national security.

This advanced system incorporates multi-sensor intelligence gathering, significantly enhancing its threat detection and deterrence capabilities.

Keyur Sorathia, Head of the Technology Incubation Centre at IIT Guwahati, remarked that this groundbreaking innovation signifies a strategic leap in India’s dedication to fortifying national security through indigenous, high-tech solutions. “The AI-driven robotic surveillance system showcases the transformative potential of deep-tech startups in enhancing India’s defense capabilities. With the Indian Army actively conducting field trials, this surveillance system is on the path to large-scale deployment in sensitive areas and military installations,” Sorathia stated.

He added, “This cutting-edge, homegrown technology is poised to strengthen national security by addressing modern threats such as rogue drones and infiltration attempts. This breakthrough represents a pivotal advancement in reinforcing the nation’s borders through innovative solutions developed within the country.”
