New Delhi, Oct 13 – The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to address the ongoing traffic congestion near the Kashmere Gate Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) by constructing either a flyover or an underpass at the terminal’s exit point, as confirmed by a senior government official on Monday.
The road segment in front of the ISBT has become a significant traffic bottleneck, exacerbated by continuous bus operations, high pedestrian activity, and its location near busy commercial areas. Officials report that traffic congestion is prevalent even during non-peak hours, creating a persistent traffic challenge.
To alleviate the traffic issues at Kashmere Gate, the PWD plans to build a flyover approximately 100 meters from the bus exit, which would traverse over the Yudhister Setu flyover and terminate near the Metcalfe House traffic signal. Alternatively, an underpass is also being considered. A feasibility study for this project will be conducted shortly, according to the official.
This infrastructure development aims to separate traffic not destined for the ISBT, allowing it to proceed without delay. The final decision regarding the project will be made following the feasibility report.
Despite previous attempts to mitigate traffic congestion in this area, no sustainable solutions have been implemented. Traffic near gate number 1 of the ISBT on Ring Road remains slow due to the bottleneck caused by buses entering and exiting the terminal.
The Delhi traffic police previously identified the Kashmere Gate area as an ‘accident-prone’ zone due to heavy pedestrian traffic and recommended that the PWD implement necessary changes; however, the situation has largely remained unchanged.
The official also mentioned that the tender for hiring a consultant to conduct the feasibility study will be issued soon.
In April of this year, the Delhi government announced plans to decongest areas surrounding the Metcalfe House intersection and beyond. Additionally, under a separate initiative, the PWD is working on a project to construct a 680-meter-long six-lane flyover starting near the Civil Lines Trauma Centre and the DRDO office. This project aims to alleviate congestion at the Metcalfe House T-junction, where the Outer Ring Road and Hedgewar Road converge.
