Assam IED blast on railway track halts train services, causing significant disruptions.

Kokrajhar (Assam), Oct 23 – Railway services in Lower Assam and parts of north Bengal faced significant disruption early Thursday due to an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) on a railway track in Kokrajhar district, according to officials.

The explosion occurred approximately five kilometres from Kokrajhar railway station on the route to Salakati shortly after midnight. An official reported that the blast destroyed nearly three feet of railway line, with debris from the damaged track scattered several metres away.

Kokrajhar Senior Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh confirmed that there were no casualties or derailments resulting from the incident. He noted, “The damage was limited to a short portion of the track, which was promptly repaired. Train movement has resumed now.”

Train operations were suspended overnight, impacting several Up and Down trains in Lower Assam and northern West Bengal until around 8 am. Another official stated that railway and security personnel conducted thorough inspections of the affected section before restoring full services.

In response to the incident, authorities have heightened security measures along the route and initiated an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the blast.
