Sao Paulo, Oct 23 (AP) – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced on Thursday his intention to run for reelection in 2026, aiming for a fourth nonconsecutive term. During an official visit to Indonesia, Lula stated, “I’m turning 80, but you can be sure I have the same energy I had when I was 30. And I’m going to run for a fourth term in Brazil.”
Currently on a tour across Asia, Lula met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia. Reports indicate that he is expected to meet US President Donald Trump for the first time on Sunday, following a recent conciliatory phone call. The discussion will likely center on the 50 percent trade tariff imposed by Trump on Brazil.
According to Brazil’s constitution, presidents can only serve two consecutive terms. Lula returned to power in 2023 after a 13-year hiatus and is eligible to run again. Prior to defeating Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 election for his third nonconsecutive term, Lula had indicated that it would be his final campaign due to his age and the need for political renewal. However, he began hinting at a potential reelection bid early in his current term.
In February 2023, Lula mentioned the possibility of seeking reelection in 2026, noting that his decision would depend on the political landscape and his health. As a prominent figure on Brazil’s left, Lula is the longest-serving president since the country’s return to democracy 40 years ago.
Concerns have been raised by some Brazilian politicians regarding Lula’s age and recent health issues, including emergency surgery for a brain bleed following a fall. Despite this, Lula maintains that he is healthy and energetic, often sharing workout videos on social media.
Currently, Lula leads in polls for the 2026 election, although approximately half of voters express disapproval of his presidency. The tariffs imposed by Trump have revitalized Lula’s political standing. His main political rival, Jair Bolsonaro, is currently barred from running for office and is serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup. Analysts suggest that any viable opposition candidate may depend on Bolsonaro’s influence while he serves his sentence under house arrest. (AP) GRS GRS
