Adelaide, Oct 23 – Rohit Sharma showcased a blend of resilience and skill, scoring a crucial 73 runs on a challenging pitch, which became the backbone of India’s total of 264 for 9 against Australia in the second ODI on Thursday.
Rohit’s innings spanned 97 balls and included a significant 118-run partnership for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 61 runs off 77 balls. This partnership was vital after India faced early setbacks, losing captain Shubman Gill for 9 runs and star batsman Virat Kohli for a duck in quick succession.
In the latter stages of the innings, Axar Patel stepped up with a commendable 44 runs off 41 balls, emulating Ravindra Jadeja’s role in the Test team. His partnership of 39 runs with Washington Sundar, who scored 12 runs, provided the bowlers with a competitive target. Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh added a valuable 37 runs for the ninth wicket, finishing with scores of 24 not out and 13, respectively, to push the total past 260.
For Australia, Adam Zampa made a significant impact, returning to the squad after the birth of his second child, taking 4 wickets for 60 runs. Xavier Bartlett also impressed with figures of 3 for 39 in 10 overs, including the crucial wicket of Kohli.
Rohit’s innings was characterized by determination, particularly during the Powerplay when Josh Hazlewood posed a challenge with his tight bowling, finishing with figures of 0 for 29 in 10 overs. Rohit faced a tough period, enduring 17 consecutive dot balls, while both he and Iyer appeared cautious due to the pitch conditions.
Kohli’s dismissal came as he attempted to play an outswinger from Bartlett, only to be trapped in front. As he left the field, Kohli acknowledged the Adelaide crowd, a venue where he has previously excelled.
Rohit’s initial approach focused on consolidation, keeping his bat close to his body and selectively leaving deliveries. His first notable shot was a flicked boundary off Mitchell Starc. The veteran batsman gradually found his rhythm, displaying glimpses of his classic style with back-to-back pulls off Mitchell Owen’s medium pace.
Despite the challenges, Rohit aimed to silence his critics, demonstrating his willingness to grind through tough phases before eventually opening up his game. While the 2027 World Cup is on the horizon, Rohit aimed to prove that he still possesses the ability to perform at a high level. After navigating the initial difficulties, he appeared comfortable at the crease.
Although a 33rd ODI century was within reach, Rohit’s innings ended when he attempted a big shot off Starc, leading to his dismissal. Meanwhile, Kohli continued to face scrutiny, leaving the ground with a raised fist to the Adelaide spectators, who may have witnessed his last appearance in this series. Kohli’s consecutive ducks have raised concerns about his form, as India had previously lost the opening match of the three-game series by seven wickets in Perth.
