Ottawa, Oct 24 – Canada Post has introduced a new Diwali-themed stamp, celebrating the multicultural essence of Canada.
In a recent social media announcement, the High Commission of India in Ottawa expressed gratitude to Canada Post for the launch of the stamp, which features a traditional Rangoli design, symbolizing the Diwali festival.
Canada Post stated in a press release that it is “proud to issue a stamp marking Diwali, a significant festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and other communities in Canada and globally,” highlighting the nation’s cultural diversity.
The release elaborated on the cultural significance of Rangoli, describing it as intricate floor patterns created as artistic expressions meant to be swept or washed away. These designs, often made from grain, flower petals, colored sand, or rice, beautify living rooms, courtyards, and entranceways during Diwali, symbolizing creativity and hospitality.
Since 2017, Canada Post has issued Diwali-themed stamps annually. The 2025 stamp, designed by Indian-origin artist Ritu Kanal, showcases a Rangoli pattern and includes the word “Diwali” in both Hindi and English.
According to the High Commission of India’s website, Canada is home to one of the largest Indian diasporas globally, with an estimated 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and around 1 million non-resident Indians. The diaspora is primarily concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area, Greater Vancouver Area, Montreal (Quebec), Calgary, Edmonton (Alberta), Ottawa National Capital Region (Ontario), and Winnipeg (Manitoba), contributing significantly to the Canadian economy and society.
