Ottawa, Oct 24 – Canada Post has unveiled a new Diwali-themed stamp, celebrating the nation’s multicultural identity. The stamp features a traditional Rangoli pattern, a significant symbol during the Diwali festival, and was announced in a social media post by the High Commission of India in Ottawa, which expressed gratitude for the release.
In a press release, Canada Post emphasized its commitment to recognizing cultural diversity in Canada, stating, “We are proud to issue a stamp marking Diwali, a major festival observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and other communities in Canada and around the world.” The release highlighted the cultural importance of Rangoli, describing it as intricate floor patterns created with materials such as grain, flower petals, colored sand, or rice. These artistic expressions are typically displayed in living rooms, courtyards, and entranceways during the Diwali celebrations.
Since 2017, Canada Post has issued Diwali-themed stamps annually. The 2025 stamp, designed by Indian-origin artist Ritu Kanal, showcases a Rangoli pattern and includes the word “Diwali” in both Hindi and English.
According to the High Commission of India, Canada is home to one of the largest Indian diasporas globally, with an estimated 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and around 1 million non-resident Indians. The diaspora is primarily concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area, Greater Vancouver area, Montreal (Quebec), Calgary, Edmonton (Alberta), Ottawa National Capital Region (Ontario), and Winnipeg (Manitoba), contributing significantly to the Canadian economy and society.
