New Delhi, Oct 24 – Congress leader and former MP Udit Raj has accused authorities of forcibly evicting his family from their bungalow in Pandara Park, New Delhi, despite the ongoing legal proceedings regarding the matter.
The bungalow is allocated to Udit Raj’s wife, Seema Raj, a retired IRS officer, who confirmed that she had paid the license fee until May 31 of this year. Udit Raj expressed his frustration in a statement to PTI Videos, highlighting the belongings being removed from their residence. He emphasized that the case is sub-judice, with the next hearing scheduled for October 28, questioning the urgency of the eviction. He characterized the situation as “harassment” and “punishment” for being a Dalit and representing the voices of the underprivileged.
Udit Raj alleged that the eviction was a “selective” and “motivated” action aimed at targeting an opposition leader from a lower caste, while many upper-caste individuals continue to occupy government bungalows without issue. He attempted to reach Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for clarification but reported that no higher officials were available to respond to his inquiries.
Describing the eviction as an “atrocity,” Udit Raj indicated his intention to escalate the matter within his party. He shared a video on X, showcasing his household items being discarded onto the street. Seema Raj stated that she had requested an extension until the end of November or early December to finalize her affairs and secure alternative accommodation.
She noted that retired officers are typically allowed to retain government housing for six months without complications. Seema Raj had previously sought an extension from the Directorate of Estates, citing her father’s critical illness, who has since passed away. She criticized the issuance of the eviction notice despite the imminent court hearing, claiming that the eviction occurred during a court holiday to prevent them from seeking legal recourse.
On Thursday, Udit Raj revealed on X that officials from the Directorate of Estates had visited their residence to inform them of the eviction scheduled for Friday. Raj, who served as the MP for North West Delhi from 2014 to 2019 as a BJP member before joining Congress, expressed his willingness to vacate but questioned the haste of the authorities. He remarked, “Why is the same yardstick not applied to others who are overstaying? I will not budge from my fight for social justice.”
