Mumbai, Oct 24 – Piyush Pandey, renowned as ‘India’s Adman’, passed away on Friday morning due to illness at the age of 70. He was instrumental in transforming the advertising landscape in India by popularizing Hindi and infusing humor into campaigns, breaking away from the traditional English-dominated advertisements.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, highlighting Pandey’s monumental contributions to advertising and communications. He fondly remembered their interactions and extended his thoughts to Pandey’s family and admirers. Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal also paid tribute, with Sitharaman referring to him as a “titan and legend” who revolutionized communication through relatable language and warmth. Goyal acknowledged Pandey’s creative genius that redefined storytelling in advertising.
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani praised Pandey for instilling self-confidence in Indian advertising, calling him a friend and a master of his craft. Industrialist Anand Mahindra noted Pandey’s significant impact on the ad industry, emphasizing that his infectious laughter and zest for life would be remembered alongside his iconic campaigns.
Noted broadcaster Harsha Bhogle remarked on Pandey’s ability to present Indian culture beautifully in advertising. Uday Kotak, Founder & Director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, described him as an innovative thinker and a humble individual. Former Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant highlighted Pandey’s unique approach to branding that showcased India’s creativity on a global scale.
Pandey began his career at Ogilvy India in the early 1980s, where he spent over four decades, becoming synonymous with the firm. He stepped down as executive chairman in 2023 but continued in an advisory capacity. His work for brands like Fevicol, Cadbury, and Asian Paints remains celebrated, earning him numerous global advertising awards and India’s civilian honor, Padma Shri.
Born into a family of nine, Pandey explored various professions before making his mark in advertising. He was also a passionate cricketer, representing Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy. His elder sister, actor Ila Arun, shared insights into his nurturing nature and love for kite flying.
Pandey’s creative contributions extended beyond advertising; he penned lyrics for the iconic ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ song and authored several books, including “Pandeymonium: Piyush Pandey on Advertising.” He was educated at St Xavier’s School in Jaipur and St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, where he earned a post-graduate degree in History.
He is survived by his wife Neeta, and the couple, who had no children, considered their dogs as family.
