Capterra study reveals Indian businesses experience significant software regret.

Gurgaon, 3rd March 2025 – A recent study conducted by Capterra has revealed that a staggering 72% of Indian businesses have expressed regret over their software investments within the past 18 months, a figure that significantly surpasses the global average. The 2025 Tech Trends Survey, which surveyed 3,500 software buyers worldwide, including 350 respondents from India across 12 countries, sheds light on the difficulties companies encounter when selecting appropriate technology and provides valuable insights into effective purchasing strategies.

High Regret Rate Among Indian Businesses

The findings indicate that security and IT-related software are the most regrettable purchases, with 54% of respondents reporting dissatisfaction. This is followed by marketing and communication tools (37%), finance and accounting software (34%), human resources tools (32%), and sales and business development tools (31%). These statistics highlight the urgent need for Indian businesses to enhance their software purchasing processes.

Key Findings:

– Financial Impact: 56% of Indian firms that experienced software regret reported facing significant or monumental financial repercussions.
– Strategic Approach: Successful buyers tend to begin with a concise list of products, averaging 5.2, and engage in comprehensive research while interacting closely with vendors.
– Essential Research Tools: Product review and comparison websites, customer feedback, and insights from industry experts are vital resources for effective buyers.
– Vendor Engagement: Product trials, interactions with vendor customer support, and online demonstrations play a crucial role in influencing successful purchasing decisions.
– Flexibility is Key: Successful buyers are more willing to adjust their initial vendor lists during the evaluation phase.

Root Causes of Software Regret

The research identifies the primary reason for software purchase regret among Indian businesses as investing in overly complex technology (42%), closely followed by adopting tools that are too simplistic (39%). This underscores the critical need for businesses to find the “just right” fit for their specific requirements. The challenge of identifying the right product is particularly pronounced in India, with 42% of companies citing it as a significant hurdle, compared to the global average of 36%.

Additional factors contributing to software regret include:

– Challenges in training and onboarding users (37%)
– Inadequate technical support services (37%)
– Unexpectedly high costs (36%)
– Incompatibility with existing systems (36%)

Tessa Anaya, an analyst involved in the study, commented, “Indian companies appear to face greater challenges in identifying suitable tools than decision-makers in other regions, leading to more frequent purchase regret. This emphasizes the importance of studying the habits of successful software purchasers, such as engaging with vendors, utilizing product review and comparison sites for research, and taking advantage of product trials when available.”
