Gandhinagar, Mar 6 – Infineon, a leading German semiconductor company, has made a significant move in the Indian market by signing its inaugural agreement with CDIL Semiconductors. This partnership aims to supply silicon wafers for the production of power chips within India, as confirmed by senior officials from Infineon on Thursday.
As part of this agreement, Infineon will provide bare semiconductor wafers to CDIL. The Indian company will then process these wafers for assembly and packaging, ultimately creating power chipsets that can be utilized in a variety of applications, including power inverters, solar technology, automotive power solutions, and renewable energy systems.
CS Chua, President and Managing Director of Infineon Technologies Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Infineon will supply silicon to CDIL. India is a significant and expansive market where we require partners like CDIL who comprehend local needs. This is our first agreement of this nature in India.”
Continental Device India (CDIL), established in 1964, holds the distinction of being India’s first semiconductor manufacturer, focusing on discrete semiconductors and silicon carbide (SiC) devices.
Pankaj Gulati, President of CDIL, highlighted the innovative potential of this partnership, stating, “By combining Infineon’s cutting-edge wafer technology with CDIL’s advanced OSAT capabilities, we are setting new standards in innovation and localization. This collaboration not only fosters growth but also propels innovation, accelerates the ‘Make in India’ initiative, and positions India as a center for semiconductor excellence.”
Initially, CDIL plans to manufacture power chips for the Indian market, with aspirations to explore international opportunities in the future. Additionally, CDIL is already exporting power semiconductors to China, further expanding its global footprint.
